CARNINJA BUYING GUIDE
How to compare Japanese used-car prices
Choose comparable sold cars and understand the limits of an auction price estimate.
Match the important details first
Compare the same year, car family, model code and trim package. Then look for similar mileage, condition grade and equipment. A cheaper car with a different specification may not be a useful comparison.
Use sold prices with care
A recorded sold price is more useful than an opening bid when estimating market value. CarNinja uses up to ten closest eligible sold records and averages their prices. A single comparable is useful evidence, but cannot show the variation across multiple sales.
Look at the complete cost
The auction price is only part of your budget. Ask for a breakdown covering Japan-side costs, shipping, import duty, exchange rate assumptions and service charges. Confirm current amounts before making a purchase.
An estimate is not a winning bid
Condition, equipment and the competition on auction day can change the final price. Set your maximum budget with your partner before bidding.
